Event Summary:
The Carolingian Dynasty replaced the Merovingians and forged a new Frankish empire that reshaped Western Europe’s political and religious order.
Pepin the Short Seizes Power (751):
Pepin III, known as Pepin the Short (age 33), deposed the last Merovingian king with papal approval. He founded the Carolingian Dynasty and tied Frankish rule to papal legitimacy.
Papal Alliance Strengthens Rule:
In return, Pepin defended the Pope against Lombard threats. He donated conquered lands to the papacy, creating the Papal States. This alliance fused Frankish kingship with Christian duty.
Charlemagne Expands the Empire (768–814):
Charlemagne (age 26 at accession) launched campaigns across Saxony, Lombardy, and Spain. He united most of Western Europe under Christian rule and forced conversion on conquered peoples.
Cultural and Religious Reform:
Charlemagne revived learning and religious orthodoxy. He established palace schools, standardized Latin, and promoted script reform through the Carolingian Renaissance.
Crowned Emperor in Rome (800):
On Christmas Day, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne “Emperor of the Romans.” This act revived the Western Roman imperial title and positioned the Franks as heirs of Rome.
Empire Built on Fragile Foundations:
Charlemagne ruled through local counts and bishops. His empire lacked uniform laws and consistent taxation, depending heavily on personal loyalty and family ties.
Louis the Pious (814–840):
Charlemagne’s son Louis (age 36 at accession) ruled with piety but failed to hold the empire together. His sons’ rivalries sparked civil war.
Treaty of Verdun (843):
Louis’s grandsons divided the empire into three kingdoms. This treaty set the geographic foundations for modern France, Germany, and Italy.
Decline and Disintegration:
Successors proved weak. Viking, Magyar, and Muslim raids exposed internal fractures. By 888, the Carolingian Empire dissolved into smaller feudal realms.
Why It Matters:
The Carolingian Dynasty redefined kingship, revived Roman imperial ideals, and laid Europe’s medieval foundation. Its legacy shaped political borders, religious authority, and educational reform across the West.
