Event Summary:
The Seven Years’ War was the first truly global conflict. It redrew colonial empires, reshaped European alliances, and planted the seeds of both the American and French Revolutions.
Shifting Alliances – The Diplomatic Revolution (1756):
Austria allied with France, reversing centuries of rivalry. Britain allied with Prussia. These realignments created two competing blocs: Britain–Prussia vs. France–Austria–Russia.
War Begins in Europe:
Frederick II of Prussia (age 44) preemptively invaded Saxony. He aimed to protect Prussia and outmaneuver his enemies before they could strike first.
Continental War Ravages Central Europe:
Prussia fought Austria, Russia, and France on multiple fronts. Despite being outnumbered, Frederick used speed and discipline to win key battles at Rossbach and Leuthen.
Russian Advance Threatens Berlin:
By 1760, Russian and Austrian troops reached Berlin. Prussia neared collapse until Tsar Peter III (age 34) suddenly ended hostilities in 1762, admiring Frederick.
Colonial War Across the Globe:
In North America (French and Indian War), Britain seized Canada from France. In India, Robert Clive (age 31) led British forces to dominate Bengal. Britain also took French Caribbean islands and parts of West Africa.
Naval Supremacy Secured:
Britain’s navy destroyed French fleets at Quiberon Bay and elsewhere. Control of the seas ensured British dominance in trade and colonies.
Treaty of Paris (1763):
France ceded Canada and lands east of the Mississippi to Britain. Spain, France’s ally, gave Florida to Britain but received Louisiana in return.
Europe Reset by Treaty of Hubertusburg:
Prussia retained Silesia, frustrating Austria’s war goals. The balance of power in Central Europe shifted permanently in Prussia’s favor.
Why It Matters:
The Seven Years’ War dismantled French colonial ambitions and made Britain the world’s leading imperial power. Its costs destabilized European monarchies, igniting fiscal crises that would fuel revolutions (American and French) on both sides of the Atlantic.
